Water heater rebates in 2026: what's real, what expired

Half the rebate advice online is out of date. Here's the 2026 reality: the federal tax credit is gone, the state rebate programs are live.

Reviewed against July 2026 pricing data. Sources at the bottom of this page.

Expired: the 25C federal tax credit

The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit — up to $2,000 back on heat pump water heaters, 30% of project cost — ended December 31, 2025. Installations completed by that date can still be claimed on the 2025 tax return (IRS Form 5695), but a 2026 installation gets nothing federal. Any site or salesperson quoting you the $2,000 credit for a new 2026 install is working from last year's script.

Live: state HEAR rebates, up to $1,750

The Home Electrification and Appliance Rebate program (HEAR) is funded federally but run state-by-state, and participating states are actively paying rebates in 2026 — Washington's program, run by the state Department of Commerce, is a verified live example. For water heaters the headline number is up to $1,750 toward an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater.

Mechanically, most states apply it as an upfront discount through a registered contractor rather than a mail-in rebate — which means your installer needs to be enrolled in the state program. Ask before you sign.

Don't forget the utility layer

Separate from HEAR, many gas and electric utilities pay their own $100–$800 rebates for efficient water heaters, sometimes stackable with state money. Search your utility's name plus "water heater rebate" and check the fine print on ENERGY STAR tier requirements before purchase, not after.

The honest math

A heat pump water heater at $2,000–$4,600 installed, minus $1,750 HEAR (if you qualify) and a utility rebate, can land at standard-tank money while cutting water-heating electricity use by two-thirds. If you don't qualify on income and your state isn't participating, the calculus reverts to the gas vs electric comparison — and a standard swap is still the value play.

Questions people ask

Is there still a federal tax credit for water heaters in 2026?

No. The 25C credit (up to $2,000 for heat pump water heaters) expired December 31, 2025. Only installations completed by that date can claim it, on the 2025 return.

What water heater rebates are available in 2026?

State HEAR rebates — up to $1,750 for ENERGY STAR heat pump water heaters, income-qualified, in participating states — plus utility rebates of $100–$800 in many territories.

Who qualifies for HEAR water heater rebates?

Households under 80% of area median income can have up to 100% of project cost covered; 80–150% AMI gets up to 50%. Above 150% AMI isn't eligible. Your installer usually must be enrolled with the state program.
